Body-shaping lingerie that looks great with your clothes on AND off.
A couple of weeks ago, I had to be filmed for the Lorraine show with Mucky Book Club. So, like any sane woman, I donned my control underwear and headed out in my best frock.
Except, over the course of that evening, it occurred to me that there’s nothing sane about Spanx. They are the lingerie equivalent of purgatory. Either you go for just the big pants, in which case you’re continually fighting the roll-down; or the bodysuit, so you’re left wondering how on earth you’re going to pee; or the slip, as I did, which means that knickers are contraindicated.
By the end of the evening, I was sure there had to be a better way. I kept having to tug the damned thing down, my armpits were chafing, and I was suffering rampant paranoia that I might have flashed my flange on TV. And let’s not mention how awful it looked without my clothes to cover it.
If I was just a bit smarter, I could have chosen lingerie that let my clothes sit better, reigned in any wobble, and looked great when everything else had hit the bedroom floor. Our grandmothers knew all this stuff, and it’s high time we remembered it.
Here are some alternative ideas that will look great on and off. (P.S. it starts with buying the right size – too-tight=bulges).
- Gossard Ohh La La Corselette – control, support (up to FF) and general gorgeousness.
- Wearing stockings rather than tights gets rid of the nasty line around the waist that tights give. Leopard-print optional.
- A waspie sits on the waist to add shame and smooth lines. This one has suspenders too.
- A simple body is comfortable and smoothes your silhouette. This one has a thong back, so no VPL either.
- When did we abandon the slip? They’re Elizabeth Taylor -sexy, cover a multitude of sins, and make dresses skim the body beautifully.
- Another returnee to the fashion fold, a girdle nips in the waist, tames the bottom and looks retro-fabulous.
- Everyone loves a corset – but it’s worth buying a decent once to avoid evenings spent writhing in discomfort. This one’s the real deal.
- A deep suspender belt can offer stability to one’s mid-section, whilst the solid clips on this belt give you the confidence that your stockings will stay up!
- If you’ve never tried french knickers before, they’re hugely comfortable, and offer great lines under trousers and dresses.
- A silky camisole helps clothes to drift over our curves. This Agent Provocateur number is a gorgeous colour.
- This classic playsuit combines French knickers and a camisole, and will look delicious with dark stockings.
- Great for strapless dresses, this little corselette adds curves at the waist, and gives a smooth line over the hips.

nice post.
